Kaizen Volleyball Club in Japan – Day 3

Day 3 of the tour started with breakfast then checking out of the Moxy Hotel. We took a motor coach to Kyoto; first stop was the Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its thousands of torii gates.

After a short hike into the forest of Mount Inari and photos before the torii, we enjoyed some food from the street vendors before heading to Arashiyama.

After a group lunch, some of the group headed to the bamboo grove and others to the Kameyama-koen monkey park. The weather was hot and humid that day, so we cooled off with soft serve before heading to the Kyoto University of Foreign Studies (Kyoto Gakokugo Daigaku).

We were welcomed by the university students who had some games and activities for us to enjoy. A paper airplane contest, calligraphy, and a sumo contest with paper wrestlers were a part of the cultural exchange. As Caitlyn Kadooka said, “their reception for us was as warm as the weather.” The students exchanged omiyage before saying sayonara.

Dinner was served at the university cafeteria (chicken katsu curry) ahead of the second match of the trip. Kaizen defeated the university in the first set before dropping the next 3 very closely contested games. The girls said their farewells and got settled in for an overnight bus ride to Tokyo.
